I just replaced my front tire, it looks like 5900 miles on Arkansas gravel get the best of a stock trailwing.
I did the 6000 mile oil change and adjusted the valves while I was at it. Rainy days are good for something after all.

What did you replace it with? I'm really happy with the Goldenboy Shinko tire. I put on the 5.10-18

I replaced it with a stock trail wing, I had one on hand that I'd bought for my old TW and never used. I really want to try the Shinko, maybe next year. I know there are better choices than the stock tire, but since I already had a new one sitting here it would have been silly not to use it.

Well, I used the new stock trailwing for about 2,500 miles and replaced it with a Shinko 244 in 5,10x18. It's an amazing change for he better.

The official state soil in Michigan is sand and we have a LOT of deep, loose sugar sand in northern Michigan.  I know how to ride in it but the stock tire just didn't get it.  It plowed in a number of times with me and the bike tangled up on the ground.  I took the advise of everyone and put 5.10 Shinko 244 on both my bikes and the difference is amazing.  I still go down once in a while if I get caught in a hidden rut where a logger turned around but the tire stays on top of the sand much better than the stocker.  I like it a lot better on the road too.  You made a smart move R80rt.

Here in the hills sand isn't a problem, but the gravel back roads are like riding on greasy marbles. With the 244 it's not a big deal, I avoid pavement like the plague but it's pretty darn good there too.

With the stock tire, I moved about like a drunken sailor.  I suspect anything would be better. I was lucky enough to get the same tire that Goldenhtr recommended.  If you want to do much dirt, I am of the opinion that the stock front tire should be one of the first things you upgrade.  The traction it provides in dirt is so marginal, the front-end would (for me) wash-out with no warning.  At my age, it is getting harder and harder to pickup the bike.  Gerry

You are right, the stock front tire should be replaced as soon as possible. I ride on gravel or dirt roads and the stocker was terrible. The SR244 makes my life much better out there on the back roads.
