| Subject: What should first 600 miles dealer service cost? 7/8/2010, 5:22 am | |
| I phoned the dealer yesterday. My friend there told me $275.00 for first 600 miles service. This seems awful high for a TW.
How much should it cost? Should I just do all the items on the list myself? I am wanting to learn to check valves, never have done this, most of my bikes were new or self adjusting. I've had dealer check bikes that needed it so far but I'm very mechanical and want to learn this. What's best advice? Thanks Ken ken@shape-master.com | |

| Ken, it seems high to me as well, but then, you need the service they provide. The most important thing that you may be uncomfortable doing would be the valve adjustment. The rest of the stuff is checking clutch adjustment, chain and brake adjustment, oil change and filter cleaning, tire pressure, nuts, bolts and maybe head-set tightness. Since you are asking the question, I suggest you pay someone else, though not necessarily an official "Yamaha" shop. I took mine to an independent shop that charged half as much. The work/skill level is pretty basic and any fair mechanic should be able to do it correctly. If you have a warranty, you need to prove that you had all the basic/required work done so keep the receipts. Gerry | |

| Shape, the checkup list is really pretty basic. Not sure of your abilities/comfort level, but I don't think anyone would have much trouble doing any of that work after the first time. Do you have a friend/aquaintence that does his own work that would assist the first time? I really enjoy the time spent maintaining the bikes (all 7 :-) ), gives me a chance to really inspect/check through things.
I suspect a shop would charge Mr. Gizmow extra just because of all the cool stuff they would have to remove before they could service his!
